Abstract

The author discussed briefly with references about development of hearing acuity in infants and children and auditory acuity in people of advanced age.
The normal hearing acuity in infants and children was reported by Inosh, H. The average normal hearing threshold is 50 dB at one month, 40 dB at 3 months, 30 dB at 6 months and 20 dB at one year of age.
C.C. Bunch and Kimura T. reported the hearing of people of advanced age who showed almost normal pure tones thresholds below 500 Hz and poor hearing in high frequencies over 2000 Hz in advanced age. The beginning of the hearing loss is 5th decade and in 6th decade high frequencies.
Schuknecht, H. F. and Hansen et al. pointed out that the main pathological change of the presbycusis is the atrophic change of Cortis organ spiral ganglion and cochlear nerve.
